The University of Illinois'' softball recruiting class is growing. The fourth and latest high school senior to commit orally to the Illini is first baseman Bridget Pluta of South Bend (Ind.) St. Joseph, a school of 760 students.
Last weekend, she visited campus and decided to join coach Terri Sullivan''s program. Pluta made her announcement Friday.
The Illini are starting a team this school year with an abbreviated spring schedule.
The 17-year-old Pluta hit .472 with 25 stolen bases as a junior. She committed one error and was the team''s most valuable player. As a sophomore on a 22-10 team that reached Indiana''s state semifinals, she hit .468.
Entering her senior season, the 5-foot-10 Pluta has been a three-year starter in volleyball, basketball and softball. As a junior, she was also the team MVP in basketball. She will be a premedicine major at Illinois.
Sullivan is not allowed to comment about recruits until they have signed a letter of intent.
