CHAMPAIGN — Tracy Abrams, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Mount Carmel, has given an oral commitment to Illinois.
Abrams told Illinois coach Bruce Weber of his college decision this afternoon during a phone conversation.
"I'm going to Illinois," Abrams told HQ today. "It felt like they really wanted me down there."
Abrams' coach, Mike Flaherty, said "I think he's at peace with the decision. He feels good about it."
Illinois signed four 2009 prospects in November: Brandon Paul (Warren), Joseph Bertrand (Sterling), Tyler Griffey (Wildwood, Mo., Lafayette) and D.J. Richardson (Findlay Prep). The Illini have commitments from three 2010 prospects: Crandall Head (Crane), Jereme Richmond (Waukegan) and Meyers Leonard (Robinson).
A highly regarded sophomore, Abrams is the first member of the state's Class of 2011 to commit to the Illini.
More on what could be a watershed commitment for Illinois later on HQ.

It's a shame to be recruiting sophomores, but if that is the way the game must be played, then congratulations to Bruce and his staff.

Congratulations to Mr. Tracy Abrams for deciding where he would like to play in college basketball. Throughout the years, young high school students, as tenth graders in high school, have always had dreams of what they would like to be and where to go to college, for example, a musician, chemist, biologist, athlete. Mr. Weber and his staff seem to be "in tune" with the high school students of today dreams and desires to become future college students, and in this case, as student-athletes. Now, the young Mr. Abrams can devote and time and hard work on his acadmeic studies in high school and also continue to embellish and expand his basketball knowledge, skills and disposition. A side topic: Can one imagine the future for Illinois Basketball should Mr. Dee Brown, after his playing days are over, become a part of the Illini Basketball Coaching Staff? Just a thought!
