CHAMPAIGN — First-year Illinois wrestling coach Jim Heffernan announced on Tuesday the promotion of assistant coach Carl Perry to associate head coach.
Perry, who is in his eighth year on the staff, has helped coach 19 All-Americans and six NCAA finalists.
“Carl is a very important member of our staff and is very deserving of this promotion,” Heffernan said. “He is integral to all of our efforts from coaching to recruiting to the many administrative duties he performs.”
Perry was the 2000 NCAA champion at 141 pounds for Illinois and was a two-time All-American.
Barlow goes low. Illinois’ Zach Barlow carded a 3-under-par 69, his lowest round of the fall, to tie for sixth place after two rounds at the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii.
The sixth-ranked Illini, who had a 1-over 289 Tuesday, were tied for third place with Long Beach State in the 12-team tournament.
San Diego State and Santa Clara shot 2-under 286s and were first and second, respectively.
Women’s golf 17th at Onion Creek. The Illinois women’s golf team wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule with a 17th-place finish at the Challenge at Onion The Illini carded a final-round 302 to finish at 42 over par in the 21-team field.
Raquel Hopton was Illinois’ best finisher. The junior tied for 32nd place with a three-round score of 218.
