McGill reaches semifinals

ROME — Tyler McGill, a former star swimmer at Champaign Central clocked a 50.90 in the 100-meter butterfly Friday and advanced to the semifinals of the event at the FINA World Swimming Championships.

McGill's time matched that of 14-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and only Milorad Cavic's 50.56 was better. McGill, who swims collegiately at Auburn, will line up next the Serbian-born Cavic in the second semifinal. Phelps, the world-record holder in the event, will swim in the first semifinal.
