Q: How is Illinois' "other" 2009 basketball recruit doing?

A: Tyler Griffey, one of four prospects to sign with the Illini in November, sometimes gets overlooked, because he's the only recruit from outside the state's borders.

Don't forget about him. He's playing the best basketball of his young career, and the senior forward from Wildwood (Mo.) Lafayette is rewriting the school's record books.

Griffey scored 23 points in a win Saturday to break the career scoring record at Lafayette. He has 1,662 points in three-plus seasons of varsity basketball.

The trend that stands out, however, is that Griffey has gotten better each season, an indication he's working at it. He scored 373 points as a freshman, 425 as a sophomore, 480 as a junior, and 384 as a senior — with six regular season games remaining.

In a unique twist, Griffey also broke the school's career rebounding record on Saturday. He eclipsed the previous mark of 802 boards. So it was a productive weekend for the Illini, and also the lone big man in their 2009 recruiting class.
