SAN FRANCISCO — The United States built a quick lead Thursday in the Presidents Cup with a dominant performance from Tiger Woods and former Illini Steve Stricker and a large surge by Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim.
Woods and Stricker played bogey-free in the difficult alternate-shot format, making four birdies on the opening six holes to build a big lead and closing out Geoff Ogilvy and 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa on the 14th hole when Woods made a 15-foot birdie for a 6-and-4 victory.

CHAMPAIGN – Minnesota's offense kept Illini keeper Alexandra Kapicka busy Sunday during the Illinois soccer team's Big Ten opener.
Kapicka turned away seven shots, and Christina Sahly and Jackie Santacaterina scored goals as the Illini and Gophers tied 2-2.
ATLANTA — Sean O'Hair got a putting tip from Tiger Woods and put it to good use Thursday in the Tour Championship, opening with a 4-under 66 to take a one-shot lead in the final FedEx Cup playoff event.
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Kaitlyn Wampler shot a 3-over-par 75 to lead the Illinois women’s golf team to a fifth-place finish in the Ron Moore Intercollegiate on Wednesday.
The Illini sophomore carded a 54-hole total of 224, 9 strokes behind medalist Stephanie Sherlock of Denver. Sophomore Samantha Sloan was the UI’s No. 2 scorer, shooting a final-round 74 to tie for 23rd at 232.
