What Bob's thinking

A lot of voters in both polls are panicking like they own stock or something. Please, folks, relax. Watch the games. See what happens. Don't keep yanking teams up and down the poll on a whim.

The News-Gazette's first seven remained the same. As they should have. Sure, you could have punished Iowa for playing poorly for three quarters against Indiana. But you can't drop them below teams with one loss.

The seven teams at the top aren't moving out of the top seven until they lose. Period. They have done enough to earn their places and they can't/shouldn't be jumped by a one-loss team.

Remember how everybody thought Southern Cal had a chance to play for the national title? Bzzzzz. Wrong again. These are not the Matt Leinart/Reggie Bush Trojans. This is a lesser version. The kind that loses at Washington, which should have meant a bigger drop by most voters.

This week's Big Mover: Oregon. The only loss is against Boise State and the Ducks drilled Southern Cal at home. Oregon is the country's best one-loss team, but anybody who puts it ahead of Boise State is a dope.

All sorts of new teams in the poll this week, led by California. BYU, South Florida, Auburn and Texas Tech also climb in. Virginia Tech is just outside. So is Boston College.
