S Bliss, Springfield, IL: What are you thoughts on Your peer Herb Gould's article? That even though Ron Guenther gave Ron Zook a vote of confidence and says he will be back, past history says that do not be surprised if Zook is let go after the season ends? He gives examples of Tepper and Turner's last year in Champaign.

I think every situation is different. But do I think it's possible that the athletic director could change his mind? Absolutely. Ron Guenther made his statement based on a 1-5 record at the time. We weren't given the opportunity to ask "What happens if the team goes 1-11?" Don't know what the answer would have been to that one.

Kraemer, Paris, IL: If Charest plays competently to above average the rest of the season, how "open" do you anticipate the QB competition will be for next year? Will Scheelhaase be as buried as Charest has been his first 2 seasons?

On a side note - it sure was nice to see the TE being used for a change. It makes all the difference in the world when the QB can complete the short to intermediate routes doesn't it?

I expect the quarterback competition to be wide open in the spring. I think it will come down to Jacob Charest, Nathan Scheelhaase and Chandler Whitmer, who enrolls in the spring. This is a great opportunity for Jacob to show the coaches he deserves to be in the mix.

Jack, Clinton, Illinois: Bob, I listened to the radio show last night and the guys were getting on you a little bit as usual. Last night it was about how you ranked Illinois pre season. Now I depend on you guys at the paper and on the radio because you guys are the experts.I read and listen to everything I can and I have to admit I drank the kool-aid.I guess my question is how guys like you and Loren who live with these guys in the spring and through Rantoul could be so wrong and the distant sporting news could be so right? All the hype about this being the best recieving group in Illinois history and all the praise given to juice and a high powered offense makes these results that much harder to take.This offense can't compete and Benn is a real dissapoitment. He has contributed very little this season.I think he should come back although I doubt he does. He sure hasn't shown the pro scouts much so far this year.Just venting I guess. Thanks Bob

I can sum it up in three words: I was wrong. You're right that I should have a better chance to call it correctly. What I saw on the field and what I heard off of it was all good in the spring and summer. But it didn't convert to the field. I think there are many reasons, including the changes in the coaching staff, that have contributed.

I wish I could have seen the team in practice once it got back to C-U. Not using that as an excuse. I still wouldn't have probably changed my opinion. The Missouri game caused a major hangover for this team, one that has never gone away.

I wouldn't pin much blame on Benn, who is playing hurt and trying his best. He is the ultimate gamer. I know he is very disappointed about this season.

Sporting News did a great job, but they still overrated Illinois. So did everybody else. I will be much more careful before next season.

Chad Hansen, Cincinnati, OH: With Jacob Charest taking Illinois to the 2 yd line near the end of the first half, don't you think it sends the wrong message to pull him in favor of Juice Williams? I think that was a buzz kill for the offense.

I agree with you. I understand the move, sort of, but think that Jacob could have run the same play. A touchdown at that point would have been big for the Illinois offense.

Stephen, Berwyn, IL: I can't stand the fact that we have so much talent at the WR position, but can't get them the ball. It's an embarrassment that we have only 5 TD receptions over 7 games. I mean Juice threw for that many in the first game last year! What has changed that much that we can't throw the ball deep anymore? Coaching that horrible, Juice's mental stability that horrible, WR's overrated??? I feel like an idiot because I told many casual college football fans to keep an eye on the Illini offense, they will be explosive this year. Now I am getting ripped on.

Tell your friends to "shut it" or you'll remind them about how often they've been wrong. Just a suggestion.

I think it's a combination of overrating the newcomers (Fayson, etc.) and an execution issue for both the quarterbacks and the coaches. They haven't called the right plays and they haven't converted the plays that were called. About the only group doing its part are the running backs.

james, iowa city, iowa: Bob rumor has it that zook got the vote of confidence because they want to see what he can do with scheelhaase next year. I do not see Jacob starting for this team next year. Think of it this way your the head coach your jobs on the line do you try with the qb you brought in that is a four star recruit or do you try to save your job with the qb who got zero time vs Indiana State and one that truly the coach does not have confidence in leading this team. I know Im riding out with guns a blazing and sticking in the guy i targeted and wanted , the guy who athletically is superior and mentally tougher and is a play maker and thats scheelhaase. Im going down with my four star recruit who is a red shirt freshman. If he wins four or 5 games to start out Zook can say hey its work in progress and we still have three more years to work with this talent etc etc etc. So mark my words people can hope and pray all they want for Jacob to start but come next year with his job truly on the line Scheelhaase will be the starter.

From what I understand, Coach Zook considered taking the redshirt off of Nathan, but has decided against it. Ultimately, that will be a good thing for Nathan and the program.

It's going to be a lot of fun to watch Nathan, Jacob and Chandler in the spring. I don't think we can know for sure what will happen, but Nathan definitely has a great chance to be the starter. So does Jacob. The coaches will go with the right guy. It's a good problem to have.

TK, Tampa, Florida: Unless there is a miraculous turn around the second half of the season, the football program (RG) faces a monumental decision at year's end: end Zook's tenure and cripple the financial future near term, or retain him and try and re-vamp the assistant coaches particularly on defense, with ostensibly a lame-duck head coach. Doesn't seem like the latter would produce any quality assistants to take such a risk. Your thoughts?

What Illinois will have to do is hire some veteran coaches who are at a lower level or some younger guys looking to move to the Big Ten. It won't be easy, but it's possible. There are a lot of great coaches out there.

Jack, Clinton, Illinois: Bob,We as fans are frustrated.We are screaming from the mountain tops because we are trying to effect change.Well our hands are tied and we need the help of the local media.This whole mess is a bad situation, partly because of the timing."Coach Guenther" having a year left makes things even more difficult.It does not make sense for him to hire a new coach and then leave a year later.I would suggest that "Coach Guenther" step down and Illinois should start fresh with a new A.D. and a new head coach and staff.I know that "Coach Guenther" has done a lot for Illinois but it is time for a change.Sometimes fresh blood can solve a lot of old problems and that is what is called for here. I would love to see the paper get on board with a similar idea and go on the record. Maybe as sports editor Jim Rossow could write an editorial calling for such a plan. We need your help. I thought the leak from Glen Mason to the media about the status of Zook's job is strange. Why would Guenther still have dinner with the guy after he hung him out to dry? Do you think this was a planned leak? If the football guy still keeps his man after a 1-11 job, what does Illini Nation have to look forward to next year? I don't think this staff has a clue how to fix the problems when they have said they don't know what the problems are. Give me a break. The coach Guenther/Zooker experiment needs to end ASAP!

I could see Ron Guenther having dinner with Glen Mason. They are in the same age bracket/financial bracket. I could see them being buddies. I don't think it was a planned leak. What I do wonder about is if it was an "off the record" commment that Mason ran with.

Thanks for all the great chats. I find it interesting that the excuse for pulling Charest at the 2yd line was because we needed a quarterback to match the run play that was called. Logic would tell me to call a play for the quarterback that just moved you down the field in a more efficient manner than we've seen all year.

I thought the same thing. Why not another short pass to the tight end? Or a rollout away from the boundary. Nobody would have followed Jacob if he had the ball. He could have run backward into the end zone.

Illini Shawn, Chicago, IL: Assuming that Zook does return, aren't we going to be in the same situation next year? The line on both sides of the ball seems to be one of the biggest issues this year. Can we expect this to improve next year?

I think the time the young linemen are getting on the field now should pay off in 2010, as long as their confidence doesn't take a hit. They will get better and the experience is huge.

There a couple of young guys on the defensive line who should help Illinois next season (Akeem Spence, Michael Buchanan).

Jack, Clinton, Illinois: Bob, Why won't they let you watch practice?Thanks

Great question. With no logical answer. Before 2008, practice had been open to the media at Illinois for all but four years in history. The three years of Gary Moeller and Ron Turner's second season. The first five years of closed practices have been losing seasons for Illinois and this one is one game away. Ron Turner reopened practice after one season and went to a bowl the next year.

Albert, Chicago, IL: with this very dismal year. Looking ahead to next year how many players do you think will ask for a release? Do you think Zook will grant them there wishes. These young men want to win you cant really blame them.

Moderator: Albert,

I think a lot will depend on changes within the staff. Some players are loyal to certain coaches. If a bunch of new guys comes in, some of the players might want to leave. Generally, the guys who are in good shape to play next season will stay and the others will look to leave.

I think Illinois has guaranteed that Jacob Charest will be back next season. I don't know if that would have been the case had he not got on the field this year.

When guys consider moving, they need to take a look at where they are going and what they are giving up. Few, if any, will move to Big Ten or even BCS programs. Illinois is a great school and C-U is a really nice place to live.

Aaron, Los Angeles, CA: Hey Bob,

Thanks for these chats, they provide the best lunchtime reading material at my desk! In your honest opinion, do you see Mike Schultz coming back next year? I know a lot depends on how we finish the season, but do you think that his style fits better with perhaps Nathan, Jacob or Chandler? Or do we go another direction entirely? And as far as the Co-DC's, do they see the writing on the wall? And if so, what are our chances of getting a solid, experienced DC?

p.s. I was on campus for homecoming, first time in 7 years. Cant believe the changes.. can you believe kids are paying $900 rent to live in high-rises with rooftop pools on green street? Yikes.

I don't think any decision has been made about the coaches, but right now you would have to think the Mike Schultz era might end after one season. I certainly wouldn't pin all of the blame for the offensive troubles on him. Not even close. He isn't the one throwing interceptions or fumbling. He's a good guy and you hope that it works out for him. He's been a joy to work with.

On defense, the system is Ron Zook's. So, if you want to do something about the coordinator, you have to fire the head coach. Dan Disch and Curt Mallory are great guys. They were in charge when the team went to the Rose Bowl. I don't know what will happen to them, but you hate the thought of anybody losing their job.

On your P.S., college is different. Those high rises look pretty cool.

BW, Tyngsboro, MA: Bob: My guess is 1-11. I'm also guessing the OC and the two-headed DC are gone at the end of the season.

Anyone else on the staff getting axed?

Ryan, Decatur, IL: With Zook guaranteed another year, and Guenther sounding like he's gonna make some changes, who do you think goes and who would be a couple possibilities to replace them?

I personally think Schultz was never really a good fit for our personnel (dink and dunk philosophy with big play personnel). TCU is obviously doing very well without him and we're struggling with him. What are your opinions on potential coaching changes?

Peter Borich, Urbana, Illinois: If Coach Zook is here until 2010, I don't believe he has a ghost of chance of turning things around unless he hires a new defensive coodinator as wellas a new offensive coordinator, as Mike Schultz has clearly been a bomb (which, by the way, he does believe in throwing). What are your thoughts on a need for a coordinator overhaul?

Andrew, Milwaukee, WI: Bob-

Which assistants do you foresee staying next year and which do you see being let go?

Stan, Lynwood, 60411: If Coach Zook does indeed remain the head coach, do you agree he needs to find a true defensive coordinator and maybe someone from the NFL to get this defense on track?

Moderator: Stan, Andrew, Peter, Ryan, BW,

I think all positions will be in question. And I think Ron Guenther will have a major impact in who leaves and who stays. I don't think it will be left to Ron Zook only.

Certainly, Ron Zook will fight to keep as many guys as possible. That's his way. He wants to be loyal.

I think there will be strong discussion about bringing in a coach who overhauls the defense, possibly away from the current Zook system. That could mean somebody from the NFL or from college. Maybe an older coach will a great reputation for fixing defenses. Not sure who that is, but it will involve some adjustments to the Illinois staff.

On offense, if Mike Schultz stays or if he goes, I expect an overhaul of the system based on the three possibilities at quarterback. Illinois will be strong at running back next season, so expect more emphasis on that no matter who is the coordinator.

Geoff, Rogers, AR: Something I haven't seen mentioned is that TCU's offense is arguably better this year than it has been in the last 3-4 years. I understand that some of that has to do with the matriculation of players. However, I see this as a sign that Schultz wasn't all that much of a magician since they are continuing to crank along. Thoughts?

Moderator: Geoff,

It can't be easy for Mike Schultz watching his former team make a run at the BCS title game while his current team is 1-6. He told me before the season he thought TCU was going to be very good on offense, which is one of the things he considered before leaving for Illinois.

I just checked the stats and the improvement is very small. 7 more yards per game, 1 more point per game and 3 minutes less per game of possession. So, it's pretty much the same offense.

Stefan, Champaign, IL: Hi Bob,

By this point I think we all recognize that the University structure, from the Board of Trustees to the football coaching staff is a mess.

Taking a birds-eye view of the situation, it looks like the timeline would involve the new BoT naming a new President, that President naming a new Chancellor, Ron Guenther retiring next summer, and a new AD being hired by the new chancellor to take over during the 2010 Football season, and given the way this program has seemingly collapsed, probably replacing Zook with a new coaching administration after next season.

For Illini Fans who believe that the program has been held down by institutional factors for decades, the prospect of new people at every level is pretty appealing. My question is, does the scenario I described conform with what you're hearing or are there other roadblocks in the process that we aren't seeing right now?

Moderator: Stefan,

I think you've got it. Ron Guenther's contract runs out next December, but he could leave sooner. Another possibility is that he could extend his contract a couple more years. But I don't see that happening with an interim president and no chancellor.

The president and chancellor hires will be interesting. They could hire somebody from Florida or Texas or California who has a strong feeling about football. That might change the way the current program is treated. Keep an eye on it.

Steven, Kansas City, MO: Hi Bob. How much do you think Rejus Benn's nagging injuries are affecting his touches? I don't simply mean getting the ball to him through the air, but last year Locksley seemed to make much more effort to get him the ball in the running game, similar to the TD that called back at the end of the half vs. Purdue. I haven't seen as much of that as I expected, and going away from that seems to be going away from the idea of getting his hands on the ball 10 - 12 times a game. He's never going to say anything about it, but I'm sure the injuries have been a part of the problem, especially earlier in the season. He's a gamer who will play through pain.

If I was running the offense, I'd have two plays. The first is a pitch to Mikel Leshoure. And the second is a slant to Benn. Repeat about 25 times.

Rupert, North Riverside, IL: Your thoughts on Rejus Benn's future. Does a horrible season like this give him a reason to come back, or is it the other way around? Does a season like this say time to move on to a place where I can have a real quarterback? Do you think his stock has dropped much?

He is going to the NFL after this season. He still has a chance to have decent numbers. But that isn't what the NFL worries about. They'll want to see him at the combine, where he will be great. No matter what his numbers this season, Benn will be a first-round draft pick next April.

Dennis, McHenry, Illinois: How can Ilinois not be consistently good in football. They don't have to be USC or Florida, but how can schools like Utah, Boise State,Missouri, and now Iowa, Wisconsin, Kansas, and Minnesota maintain respectability every year. It is a good academic school with with alot to offer correct? Is it coaching or is it the commitment of the administration? It is very frustrating!

There have been a combination of issues in the past: facilities, coaching, NCAA probation, recruiting, etc. But at this point, most of the issues have been solved. The facilities are on par or better than the rest of the Big Ten. I think the administration has shown a commmitment and it is a great school. Your first statement is correct. Illinois should be consistently good in football. Period.

Len, Sbdo, cali: Bob I Enjoy your chat sessions. Do you feel Jacob should be the starting QB the rest off the season. Do you feel if he is whether or not either Juice or Eddie should occasionally spell him. I feel certain younger players and the JC Gress should get starting time with only blows for short rests. At this point it seems they should be sorting thru what is available and trying to prepare for next year. Do you agree with that or still flounder with the same old status. Lastly who else should go of the assistant coaches besides Schultz.

I think you will see a two-quarterback setup this week. But I think if Jacob gets on a roll, he could be the guy the rest of the season.

I agree that there should be liberal use of the younger guys.

I'm not sure about the assistant coaches. But for Ron Zook to return, there will have to be changes.

Jake, Shelbyville, il: Bob,

Illini nation is so divided now do you really think it will change even if Zook is able to garner a victory or two? The faction that is rabid against Zook isn't going to change their thinking even if he does win a few games.

It seems to me that the only way to quell this fiasco would be for Zook to resign.

The sentiment for Zook to go is increasing and it doesn't look like it's going to get any better nor will it be swayed by a few wins.

I agree with you. Some people won't be happy no matter what happens the remainder of the season. And I think Illinois will take a hit in season tickets for 2010.

Eric, Chicago, IL: Bob,

What are your thoughts regarding Eddie lining up at WR so much against Purdue?

I realize that having 2 running QBs on the field at the same time gives Illinois the potential to run some tough to defend plays, but I can't help but think that Zook is only throwing Eddie out there so much at WR to appease Eddie after going with Charest at QB.

We have trouble getting the ball to our talented WRs and TEs as it is (Benn included), so I don't see why we should throw another body into the mix, taking away playing time from those that came to UofI to play receiver.

I'm not surprised it happened. I think the coaches are trying to keep Eddie with them and putting him on the field might be the only way to do that.

If he wants to play quarterback in college, he will have to transfer to a Division I-AA school. I don't see him playing quarterback at Illinois.

You make a great point about the other receivers. I think the guys who really get hurt are the younger receivers. I think you will see less of Eddie at receiver Saturday.

Drew, Urbana, IL: Bob,

What are your thoughts on Justin Green for next year. From what I hear his father is not happy with the playing time and is there any chance we lose him?

Moderator: Drew,

Not that a parent should be able to influence playing time for his son, but I think the Illinois coaches need to keep the Greens happy. If that means working him as a returner or more in the backfield, do it. I don't think a decision has been made. Remember, if he transfers, he will have to sit out the 2010 season. If he stays at Illinois, he should get a lot more time next season. I think he's got special talents.

John, Peoria, IL: It's transition time at QB … I anticipate that Juice will continue to start most of the remaining games (team unity), but his playing time will transition very rapidly to Charest and McGee. They need the game experience and the coaches need to look at two of their QB options for next year. Comments?

Moderator: John,

I agree, except for the McGee part. I think, barring injury, his time at quarterback will be limited or none the remainder of the season.

Loyal Illini, Champaign, IL: Why is everyone calling for Guenther's head? Do they forget that he is the Athletic Director? He oversees far more than just the football program. His efforts, across the board in both men's and women's sports, have really improved what Illinois has to offer student athletes, facility wise and opportunity wise. Did he make a mistake with the Zook hiring, maybe, but these same folks ripping the man were singing songs of praise that Zook was the savior when hired. Funny how the same stuff was going on with Weber after his hire but exactly the opposite. The same people maliciously attacking him, now are singing nothing but songs of praise and thankfulness. Outside of football, Guenther has done a respectable job putting quality characters in position to lead U of I athletics, not just the major men's sports. That being said, do you think that his body of work as a whole pretty much has earned him respect within the university to keep his job until he feels he is finished. I would guess that a lot more than people hiding behind keyboards slinging mud, and all but calling on congress to get involved, is needed to sway the university to make a change an immediate change at AD becuase of football.

Football becomes the focal point for an athletic director because it is the financial bus. It helps pay for the other sports, so if it isn't working well, all other sports suffer.

When a guy lasts more than a decade as athletic director, he has obviously done some very good work. Ron Guenther has been very good at hiring basketball coaches. It hasn't worked as well in football. I think the biggest concern from the anti-Guenther group is they don't want him hiring another football coach when his tenure at the school is so short.

tom, bloomington, IL: How is recruiting being affected? Do you think Guenther's statement convinced the situation at Illinois is stable? Are there reasons to be optimistic next year espcially if Zook is retained? Outside of a miraculous late season recovery what will ticket sales do if Zook is retained?

We are doing a story later in the week about recruiting and how the Illinois high school coaches feel about the program.

I think Guenther's statement helps with recruiting, because it assures the guys Illinois is after that Ron Zook will be here. But some of the top committed guys are reportedly looking at other options. That makes sense.

The good thing for Zook and his staff is that signing day isn't in December. They will have January to convince players all is well at Illinois. Based on their history, they are good at it.

angelo minuti, lakewood, co: When is Zook going to pull the plug on Juice?

I don't think that will ever happen completely. But I do think you could see a diminished role for Juice in the next few games.

jay, rockford, il: A couple questions, Bob. First, will Zook's future depend on how willing he is to making the changes Guenther is talking about? And, how much of Illinois' traditional football problem is because Chicago is just not a college sports town? It's a Bears-Cubs-Sox town and the state school is in South Bend.

I think there will be some mandated changes, some that might not go over well with Zook. But he wants to come back, so he will do what needs to be done.

I think Chicago is a great sports town, the best in the country. There is enough room for pros, colleges and high schools. I think it's important that Illinois recruit all parts of the Chicago area and the rest of the state. I would like to see the school bump its instate take up four or five guys per year. You might see that happen.

Brad S., Wyoming, Illinois: Bob,

Now that the Zooker appears to be here for another year, what pitch do you think he will use to attract and keep recruits? I understand being able to tell high schoolers to come to Illinois and help us build something special in the past, but after 5 years and nothing special built that's a tough sell. It's also kind of hard for him to toot his own horn regarding player development since many of the elite players recruited (Juice, Benn, Wilson) only seem marginally better than when they first got here.

Playing time at all positions should be the selling point. All jobs are open. Plus, the school is in the Big Ten and went to the Rose Bowl two years ago. That would be where I would start.

tom, bloomington, IL: Why would Guenther make the statement he said last Saturday about Zook when he first indicated he would wait until the season's end and it would seem to make the most sense? Didn't he box himself in with that statement if we end up 1-11 or 2-10? Was his statement to keep Zook driven by: 1. Costs to buyout Zook and his staff? 2. Belief Zook can in fact turn it around? or 3. Guenther doesn't feel he should make that decision if he'll only be the AD for another year.

I think Glen Mason and the Big Ten Network forced his hand. I don't think a buyout, belief in Zook or his own future had much to do with it.

Josef, Urbana, IL: Bob, for all the ink that can be spent on Charest vs. Juice or on Schultz, the most relevant question for the 09 Illini is this: Has any team ever had such trouble translating sustained recruiting success into success on the field? What is the explanation for the discrepancy; why hasn't all that "talent" amounted to anything?

I think it goes back to a story we had the week of the Ohio State game, which pointed to the loss of players from the 2007 class. Just 10 of 21 are with the team this season. Martez Wilson and Miami Thomas are two of the missing and the other nine are gone completely. The high-ranked recruits from what should be the basis of the team haven't panned out.

JT, monticello, il: One of the solutions being discussed is to change out a bunch of assistants/co-ordinators. You have consistently said that the defense is basically zookers and he's heavy into special teams. Is it conceivable that a person with the pride and ego of the zooker could really relinquish the control needed to allow others to right the ship.

I really believe Ron Zook will do what he has to do to remain coach, including changing his own ideas about defense.

I think there is a chance Jacob will start, but more likely Juice will start and Jacob will come in early.

I think the coaches are doing everything legal to keep the guys on the way. So are some of the players involved. If the players feel the coaching staff is safe, that will make them more likely to stay committed.

I think there was already a strong feeling about Nathan Scheelhaase and I think Jacob Charest is adding his name to the list. Throw in Chandler Whitmer and it might make more sense to move Eddie permanently to receiver. The 2 for 11 effort against Michigan State doesn't help his cause, though I'm not sure how fair of a test that was.
