Weekend Wrap - Week 8

Every Monday during the prep football season, IlliniHQ.com will give a wrap-up of how Illini commits and targets fared during the previous weekend's games. Here are a few highlights from last weekend.

THE COMMITS

  • Future Illini quarterback CHANDLER WHITMER ran threw for three touchdowns and caught a reception - a 33-yard reception on a halfback pass - to lead Downers Grove South (6-2) to a 40-0 win at Addison Trail on Friday night. Read more about Whitmer on his senior season and Illinois recruits.
  • Johnsburg wide receiver CJ FIEDOROWICZ, an Illini commit, had seven catches for 93 yards and a touchdown to lead the Skyhawks to a 24-21 win over Prairie Ridge on Friday. Fiedorowicz, who will likely take official visits to Iowa and Wisconsin, also had three interceptions on defense to lead Johnsburg (5-3) one step closer to the playoffs.
  • Illinois commit COREY COOPER, a 6-foot-2 safety, had five catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns to help lead Proviso East (2-6) to a 35-14 win over Morton on Friday.
  • Defensive back DEXTER McDONALD, an Illini commit, and the Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst Hawklets improved to 6-2 with a 41-20 win over Lee's Summit on Friday.
  • Illini commit MICHAEL HEITZ, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound offensive tackle, and South Fulton defeated Knoxville 24-6 on Friday night. Heitz helped the Rebels gain 190 yards on the ground and 215 yards through the air. Read more about Heitz here.
  • DANIEL EASTERLY, a 6-foot-4 safety committed to Illinois, and Detroit Cass Tech defeated Detroit Renaissance 28-0 on Friday to improve to 4-3 on the season. Read more about Easterly here.
  • Future Illinois offensive lineman ANDY GALLIK and Brother Rice (3-5) defeated Kankakee Bishop McNamara 28-6 on Friday night. Read more about Gallik here.
  • Illini commit SHAWN AFRYL, an offensive lineman, and Niles West fell to Evanston 38-14 on Saturday. Niles West is 1-7 on the season. Afryl (6-foot-3, 300 pounds) committed to the Illini in April and will likely play guard in college.
  • MARK WILSON, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker committed to Illinois, and Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln lost to Madison County 38-21 on Friday night. Madison County rushed for 355 yards on Wilson and the Lincoln defense.

TARGETS - How some of the Illinois recruiting targets played this week

  • Offensive tackle SEAN HICKEY and Murrysville (Pa.) Franklin Regional (5-2) defeated Highlands 33-19 on Friday night. Hickey, who has plans to commit to one of three schools: Illinois, Boston College or Syracuse, took an official visit to Illinois on Saturday. Read more about Hickey here.
  • Linebacker MITCHELL ROBERTS and the Shiloh Christian (Ark.) Saints defeated Gentry 35-14 on Friday. Roberts has offers from Illinois and Tulsa and interest from several Big 12 and SEC programs. Read more about Roberts here.
  • Hilaeah defensive linemen and Illinois recruits COREY LEMONIER and CALVIN SMITH led a Thoroughbreds defense that shutout Hialeah Gardens in a 60-0 win on Thursday. Lemonier, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound defensive end, and Smith, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound defensive tackle, have offers from Illinois, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Tennessee and several other BCS programs.
  • Jacksonville (Fla.) Ribault wide receiver JAVON BELL had three receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown as Ribault defeated Forrest 44-3. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound wideout has a scholarship offer from Illinois.
  • Offensive tackle DAN FOOSE and Paramus (N.J.) Catholic lost to Ramapo 28-6 on Friday night. The 6-foot-6, 310-pound offensive tackle has offers from Illinois, Boston College, Louisville, Minnesota, South Carolina, South Florida, Stanford, Virginia and several others.
  • Memphis Christian Brothers senior JONATHAN BROWN ran for 203 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Purple Wave to a 38-28 win over Briarcrest Christian. Brown is being recruited by most schools as a linebacker and has offers from Illinois, Arkansas, Texas Tech, Kentucky, LSU, Memphis and Ole Miss.
