Rock Island junior guard Chasson Randle took advantage of that offer as he took an unofficial visit to the Ohio State campus last week and saw the Trojans edge the Buckeyes in primetime.
"It's an impressive weekend to be down there," said Mike Mullins, Randle's AAU coach. "It's probably one of the top college football games of the weekend, so there's a lot of atmosphere."
Randle, a 6-foot-3 Class of 2011 prospect, met up with peers Brad Beal and Quinn Cook, who the Rock Island standout played with on the gold-medal winning U-16 Team USA this summer. He also spent time with Ohio State's highly touted 2010 recruiting class and Illinois Wolves alum Evan Turner.
"With Evan Turner being from our program who kind of hosted him and being around, he had a comfort level," Mullins said. "It's hard not to have a good weekend on a visit like that."
Randle is in the process of scheduling more visits for the fall. Mullins said the Rock Island guard has already planned a visit to Purdue for Sept. 26 when the Boilermakers host Notre Dame.
"He's going to Iowa State one of the weekends in October," Mullins said. "I know he's working on a weekend to get to Illinois in October, as well. Those are kind of the dates that he's looking for right now. He's deciding on the other schools. He's had a ton of schools in to see him. He's been pretty popular."
Randle has offers from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Florida State, Miami (Fla.) and Bradley. A decision is not imminent, but the picture could become clearer after touring campuses this fall.
"I think he needs to pick schools to make visits on and then see how those go," Mullins said. "It's different going down with some high schools teammates versus taking a trip to campus with your mom and dad. There's different points to the visits. I think going down to Illinois is important because his mom's been down there. Going to Purdue, I don't think his father's been there. I think he's trying to grab some more information and get his family's input. They need to be with him. That's the stage he's at now."
