Nnana Egwu spent about four weeks in his native Nigeria last month. But the 6-foot-9 St. Ignatius junior couldn't stay away from a basketball court for that long.
"He actually found a school that had a court right outside not too far from where he was staying, so he got to shoot a little bit," said Mike Mullins, Egwu's AAU coach. "He enjoyed the visit. They ended up staying a week longer than they originally intended. I think they had a very good trip. His family's changed a lot obviously in the years he's been over here, so I think he had an eye-opening experience."
Since he's returned to the US, Egwu has had quite the busy schedule. The Class of 2011 standout has received daily visits from high-major coaches. Egwu currently has offers from Illinois, Northwestern, Oregon State, Purdue, Southern Illinois and Wisconsin.
"All the schools that have offered have come in," Mullins said. "There's more coming. Illinois, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Northwestern, Iowa, Notre Dame, Michigan. It'll continue throughout the open period. I actually think Coach (Bruce) Weber was stopping in again (Wednesday or Thursday). I think Purdue was doing the same thing. Ohio State was going back (Wednesday). It's going to be a busy time until he decides to narrow the list."
Egwu, ranked the No. 48 prospect in the Class of 2011 by Rivals.com, is scheduling a series of fall visits with his parents. Mullins said the St. Ignatius big man could hit the road soon.
"I know he's going to set up visits to Illinois and Purdue," Mullins said. "He's going to try to get there in the next week or two. He's trying to do it around his father's schedule. That's stuff they'll be talking about this week. I think they'd like to try to do that but it's got to work out on his end and the school's."
