Congratulations to Brandon Wikoff and Dominic Altobell of Illinois baseball on their selections in the Major League Baseball first year player draft.
As Jeff Huth has reported, Wikoff was selected in the fifth round by the Houston Astros with pick #161. Having just completed his junior year, it's been anticipated all season long that Brandon would be drafted. Going in round five affirms the interest that we'd been hearing about in the left handed hitting shortstop. He will likely sign and begin his pro career very soon.
Senior third baseman Dominic Altobelli had a great four years at Illinois. He was selected in the 16th round by the Colorado Rockies. Dom is a class act, and his leadership on the ball club will be missed.
Best of luck to both.
I have to agree with football writer Bob Asumussen, that Josh Brent will be back on the Illini defensive line this season. After suspending him indefinitely, coach Ron Zook has always maintained that he will let the legal system run it's course before taking further action on Brent. Brent should be able to complete the terms of his sentence before Camp Rantoul opens.
