Picking out at least one of the honorary coaches for the spring game is a no-brainer: Pierre Thomas.

The Super Bowl winning running back is the ideal guy to have in front of a team that needs to turn the corner. He wasn't drafted by the NFL, but worked hard and became a crucial part of New Orleans' run to the Lombardi Trophy.

Without Thomas, New Orleans wouldn't have been in Miami. He made critical play after critical play in the NFC title game win against Minnesota.

Thomas was a great high school player. He earned News-Gazette All-State Player of the Year honors after a big senior season.

He was supposed to be a record-setting running back at Illinois. But injuries and bad timing hurt him some. He didn't get as many carries as he would have liked, but his body is stronger for the NFL because of it.

Like Kelvin Hayden, another good guy, Thomas is about to get a nice payday and be setup for a nice life after football. Can't think of anybody who deserves it more.

Hopefully, we'll see Thomas at Memorial Stadium in late April.

Great idea, Bob! Why not invite Pierre Thomas and Kelvin Hayden to the 2010 Spring Illinois Football Game? They would represent both teams who played in the 2010 Saints/Colts Superbowl game. Go Illini!!

Yes having Pierre Thomas and Kelvin Hayden here (as opposing honorary coaches) would be awesome. Why not also include former Illini stars like Simeon Rice, Howard Griffith, Hardy, etc . .
