One of the advantages of being on The Associated Press panel is the access we have to the other voters. We will use that access a few times during the season, asking the panelists questions about what's going on during the season. We'll publish the results.
They've already got the first question: name your five favorite quarterbacks this season. We will run the results in our college football special section.
Why five? Because the first three are pretty easy for most voters, some combination of Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow. We want to see who is next on the list and if some of the voters will slip in a different player or two in front of the Big Three.
We view the AP panel as the one best-suited to rank the best teams in the country. There is no agenda. Nobody will be rewarded with a BCS berth if they finish in the Top 2 of the final AP poll. Wisely, the organization took itself out of the BCS business and serves its newspaper clients and, ultimately, the readers. If you put the AP poll next to the coaches' poll, you're going to probably agree more with the AP version. We'll see who had it closest to accurate at the end of the season.
