No. 6: Virginia Tech
Why I like the Hokies: Tyrod Taylor is a talented, two-way quarterback who hit 57 percent of his passes last season and ran for 738 yards and seven scores. He's got help in the backfield from Darren Evans, who is coming off a 1,265-yard, 11-TD season. The top six receivers are back. So are three starting offensive linemen. On defense, the Hokies have seven starters back. Cody Grimm and Jason Worilds combined for 15.5 sacks. Frank Beamer has built a power in Blacksburg.
Why I don't: Taylor threw seven interceptions and just two touchdown passes in 2008. If he doesn't become more of a passing threat, the offense might bog down against more athletic teams. And there a bunch of them on a nasty schedule. The Hokies have nonconference games against Alabama, Nebraska and East Carolina. Two of the three are away from Lane Stadium.
