No. 19: Kansas
Why I like the Jayhawks: There can't be a quarterback in the country more underrated than Todd Reesing. He threw for 3,888 yards and 32 touchdowns last season with just 13 interceptions. He can run too. And he's got maybe the best receiving combination in the country. Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier combined for 189 catches and 2,400 yards in 2008. Tailback Jake Sharp ran for 12 TDs last season, giving some balance to the offense. All four starters are back in the secondary. Coach Mark Mangino has built a winner in Lawrence. The nonconference schedule is soft and should produce a 4-0 September.
Why I don't: Just two starters are back on the offensive line, making Reesing more vulnerable to sacks and interceptions. The defense doesn't return any starting linebackers. During the Mangino era, Kansas is winless against South powers Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech. All three teams are on the 2009 schedule. So are trips to Colorado and Kansas State and the annual Missouri game in Kansas City. While it's great to have all those starters back in the secondary, Kansas had one of the worst passing defenses in the country. Like it or not, Kansas is still a basketball school.
