No. 23: Oregon State

Why I like the Beavers: Start with tailback Jacquizz Rodgers, who as a freshman helped Oregon State shock Oregon State. His brother, James, is a talented receiver and should be the primary target for returning quarterback Lyle Moevao. The win against the Trojans showed the Beavers they could beat anybody. Coach Mike Riley has found the perfect place for his talents and has Oregon State playing better than many thought capable. The Beavers had a chance to win the Pac-10 last season, far exceeding preseason expectations. Oregon State should be able to sweep the nonconference, playing Portland State, UNLV and Cincinnati. The latter game is at home.

Why I don't: Playing for a spot in the Rose Bowl, the Beavers got blown out 65-38 at home against Oregon. The defense suffered major graduation hits, with just three starters returning. The secondary is all new, which is a bad thing in the pass happy Pac-10. The offense will have to control the ball and put up a lot of points, which means more pressure on the Rodgerses and Moevao. The awkward Pac-10 schedule has the Beavers playing four home games and five on the road. Oregon, Southern Cal and Cal are on the road.
