No. 28: Michigan State

Why I like the Spartans: Hard to argue with the work done by Mark Dantonio. He inherited a mess from John L. Smith and has gone 16-10 with mostly the same talent. His background in East Lansing had to be a help. So did the temporary demise of their neighbors to the east in Ann Arbor. There are 15 starters back overall, including eight on defense. The fan support in East Lansing is solid. The top three receivers are back. So are the three starting linebackers, including star Greg Jones.

Why I don't: Javon Ringer is gone. So is Brian Hoyer. And Otis Wiley. That's three huge hits for a team that doesn't have a great margin for error. Quarterbacks Keith Nichol and Kirk Cousins are talented, but their lack of experience could mean a rough start. The schedule is a pain, with consecutive trips in late September to Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Ohio State isn't on the schedule, which is good. But neither is Indiana. Playing Central Michigan and Western Michigan in the nonconference won't be fun.
