Defensive coaching candidate?

Of all the names I've read and heard for the vacated defensive line position at Illinois, the one that makes the most sense to me is Penn State's Larry Johnson.

He is into his second decade on Joe Paterno's staff, one that doesn't figure to be around much longer. Though Paterno was given a contract extension, many expect him to retire in the next year or two. Even if the new coach is from within the current staff, there are no guarantees for the other assistants.

Why Johnson? First, he has done outstanding work as the Nittany Lions defensive line coach. He has tutored several standouts, including 2008 All-American Aaron Maybin.

Reason No. 2, Johnson has the Washington, D.C. recruiting connections Illinois has lost with the departure of Mike Locksley. Johnson was a prep head coach for 19 years in Pomfret, Md., about 30 miles from D.C. Bringing Johnson to C-U would allow Illinois to continue the pipeline from Arrelious Benn's hometown.

Johnson's Pennn State teams have won at a high level, including this year's Big Ten title. If he is looking for a change, like Mike Schultz, Illinois could be the perfect fit.
